President of the Musician Union Of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bice Osei Kuffour aka Obour has expressed his excitement about the gradual change of negative perceptions about female musicians.
At the launch of Eastern Music Awards witnessed by atmogh.com in Koforidua over the weekend, Obour recounted how female musicians were despised in the past.
According to him, in times past, female musicians who had interest in doing music were called filthy names but the situation has changed for the better.
“During the days of the late Awurama Badu female artistes were tagged as prostitutes and were insulted most in the music industry”.
Speaking about MUSIGA’s contribution to the change in such ill perception, the President said the union has been able to fight for gender equality in the music industry.
“MUSIGA has sustained women in the industry now and has urged them to make music their profession,” he noted.
He added that women also have a key role to play in the music industry because the men cannot do it all alone, a reason the Musicians Union took it upon themselves to fight for their cause.
He concluded that, every musician who wants to be a professional musician should join the professional association which is MUSIGA.
Obour, since he assumed office as MUSIGA President in 2011, has been severely criticised for not improving the lives of his members.
Given a second term in 2015, he will end his tenure of office in 2019.
